Year 7 Literacy

This term our Year 7 classes have started the term with a Poetry creative writing unit. Here are some samples of our poems - the first "If I were a storm" based on a poem by Katie Boom, emotion poems based on the senses and the rollercoaster of emotions at puberty and some classes also completed Metaphor poems - based on Iain Sharpe's - I am. Our Year 7's have also been reading picture books during our library sessions as part of our Oral language programme.

If I were a storm

I would whip waves into a frenzy of white water and flood the streets

I would destroy buildings with a barrage of wind and rain

I would shoot my hail at cars and smash the windows

I would rip trees out of the ground and throw them like a toddler discarding a toy

I would creep over the landscape leveling everything in my path

I would rip up the roads and send chunks of concrete flying into buildings

I would pluck airplanes out of the sky and smash them on to the ground below

I would spread death and destruction everywhere I went

But storms never last - soon I will have to fade away to rage over the ocean unchecked and unwanted….

By Felix

If I were a storm I would rip the roofs off buildings, crumble skyscrapers and shatter windows.

I would cause a wave of destruction consuming everything in my path. I would be a tidal wave, destroying entire cities with a wall of water crashing down upon them. I would reign hell on all suburbs and towns demolishing entire villages and malls.

By now I have used up all my energy and gently die away.

Loneliness by Rosa

Loneliness is the colour of blue

It tastes like the same old bitter lump that’s been stuck inside my throat for several days.

It feels like the powerful slap of rejection spread across my face, red and tingly on my cheeks.

It looks like the foggy mist, ready to swallow me whole.

It sounds like the damp echo of voices, and the eerie ringing of silence

Loneliness smells like the sickly sweet and revolting tub of ice cream I’ve been saving for someone that never came.

Loneliness feels like your sitting alone in an empty room, walls enclosing all around.

Triggered is the Colour of red like blood spilling from the human body

Triggered taste like an undercooked burger from McDonalds

Triggered feels like a rusty nail slowly being pushed into your skin, causing you to scream

Triggered looks like a multi-million-dollar ship being destroyed with the snap of your finger

Triggered sounds like metal scraping together slowly destroying the inside of your ears

Triggered smells like red smoke coming from a battle and burning rubber ripping down trees

Triggered is a cold dark red sound ringing in your ears causing you to explode

Silly is the colour yellow

Silly tastes like a fizzer, popping in my mouth and tingling down my throat.

Silly feels like butterflies fluttering about in my stomach burning up my energy.

Silly sounds like ferocious giggles of school girls watching the boys as they walk past.

Silly smells like blueberry muffins fresh out of the oven lively sizzling.

Silly is the feeling of your throat urging you to give way for the laugh that wants to come out.
