Year 8 News

Berwick Camp

It has been another busy start for our Year 8 students with many classes preparing for and heading off to our Year 8 Camp at Berwick. It was  a fun filled week for a number of our students as they challenge themselves in the outdoors in activities such as Kayaking, Abseiling, Mountain Biking and Rifle Shooting. They also had to face the challenge of living together for a week completing duties and helping with the general running of the camp.  The benefit of a week away together as a class cannot be underestimated as  activities require teamwork, co-operation, initiative and problem solving. 

This camp would not be possible without the help and support of our parent community so thank you to those who have already been to camp this term and to those who have indicated their availability for later this year.

Science & Technology

"Wonderment" is our overall theme for the term focusing on the awe and wonder of the world around us. This involves the students looking at science and technology — thinking like scientists and carrying out investigations — going beyond a one off experiment to focus on questioning, designing experiments to test ideas, researching the science behind their ideas, being creative and trying new ideas. Classes have been using a number of contexts to develop these ideas such as kitchen science, the science of bubbles, and the science of flight. The Year 8 students will be part of a "Paper Planes" school championships at the end of the term.

Alongside these investigations we have spent a lot of time discussion and planning for this terms Science and Technology Fair. All classes have set aside their home learning programme as students develop ideas and questions to develop their own Inquiry for this school wide event to be held from June 24th–26th this term. 

Thank you for your ongoing support to your child and their teacher over this busy term and we look forward to seeing the results of our terms work when the Science and Technology fair is open for your viewing.
