Here are some samples of Year 7 writing modelled on the the "That was Summer" poem by Marci Ridlon

That was Summer

Remember when we set sail on the beach with our kayaks, our knuckles slowly turning white? Remember we desperately tried to avoid tipping into the icy cold depths of the water below us? Remember the ferocious waves that seemed intent on forcing us off the already wobbly kayaks? That was Summer.

Remember the heat of the sun's rays shining on our foreheads as we lay lifeless on the couch? Remember that dreadful feeling of wanting to do everything but not being able to stand up in the scalding heat? Remember lying in bed, trying to fight the heat, wanting nothing more than to finally drift off to sleep? That was Summer.

Remember last summer when we were forced to write a "That was Summer" poem in the sticky stifling heat of the classroom? Remember when we started laughing at some silly summer scenarios we came up with while listening to the background sounds of teachers talking, children chatting and pencils printing?

That was Summer.

Remember Roaring out onto the crystal clear lake with the biscuit flying like a falcon behind us with people screaming to slow down but no one listening?

Remember when we flew off the crazy wild beast of a biscuit and skimmed across the water like a stone?

That was Summer.

Remember when you went biking, flying in the air?

Riding through the mud splashing over your skin. Remember flying around the steep corners. Remember skidding to a stop at the bottom, dust flying off the back wheel having a laugh and saying "lets do it again"!

Remember cranking back up the steep hill to the top then thinking finally at the top having a nice cold drink of water to cool me down.

That was Summer

Remember in Wanaka, skimming over the water looking around at other people on the lake? Remember seeing the boat making massive waves going into the massive wave getting chucked into the air feeling I'm flying ?
