Orokonui Eco-Sanctuary Visit

Today we had a fantastic day at the Eco-Sanctuary as part of our Impact topic.

Our focus today was on the Impact of introduced species on Native New Zealand birds and other species. More importantly, we discussed ways we can try to preserve the native forest on our door step and encourage and protect the many rare New Zealand native birds, insects and bugs that have now made their home in the Orokonui Eco-Sanctuary. Our three guides and leaders talked us through the amazing fence design, took us through a rotation of three activities - testing the water cleanliness through looking at bug life in the water,  looking at the rare Takeha, learning how birds are tracked, through a forest walk to observe the many native birds and discussion on eradication of pests. I was really impressed with the questions asked by the students and the engagement levels throughout the day. After lunch we then went on a walk through forest to Blue skin bay, along the way looking at plants, evidence of kiwi and the tallest tree in New Zealand,

Thank you to the parents who joined us on this day. We will continue to follow up back at school on ideas that we discussed today as part of our igniter for the next part of our IMPACT unit.
