Year 7 News

The Year 7 team visited the new planetarium at the Otago Museum this month . The focus was on Matariki . Matariki is the Māori name for the star cluster known as the Pleiades. Traditionally for Māori when it appeared just before dawn in late May or early June, it signalled the start of the Māori New Year. If you haven't visited the planetarium, then I urge you to as it is an amazing new resource in Dunedin.
We were also very fortunate to be able to spend a day at our local Marae; Arai te Uru on Shetland Street. After a full powhiri, with karanga, waiata, whaikorero, hongi we had kai.
We then broke into our 4 groups and rotated through weaving harakeke putiputi, challenges with rakau, story telling and poi and fact finding about matariki.
I was incredibly proud of all of our students as they all presented their mihimihi with confidence and pride as well as our staff that were the kaikaranga and presented the whaikorero. Well done and ka pai for all your efforts and as always thanks to our parent community for helping out with these visits.
Coming up we have a parent information evening - our Pubertal change evening is being held in two weeks time on Tuesday 28th June 6pm - 6:30pm in the PAC. Please RSVP to your child's teacher. You will be able to look at resources the staff will be using next term when teaching positive puberty, an outline of the lessons will be shared and there will be an opportunity to talk to your child's teacher if you have any specific questions .
We are all really excited for the 'big reveal' of the Y7 pupils first ever science fairs... all teachers have been working through each stage of the process and are really happy with the progress in independent learning and time management shown since Term 1 . We are of course really happy with their ability and progress when thinking and acting like scientists! We hope you are able to come along to the hall and see all the science fairs on show.
As always, thank you for your support with all the programmes the Year 7 staff are offering.
Beth Downie and the Year 7 team.
