Kia Ora and a very warm welcome to our Year 8 whanau and friends.

We have had a stupendous start to the term.  All teachers have commented on how magnificently the Year 8 students have engaged with their learning.  The Olympic Games provided an enjoyable hands-on topic to both view and learn about.  Alongside this accomplishment a special congratulations to all students for their leadership in learning our school haka.   It was great to see each house perform with both confidence and vigor during our festival.

Our theme this term is "Challenge" and the trip to the movies to view Inside Out 2 was a fabulous ignitor.  It presented how emotions influence decision making in a very child friendly manner.  Our learning this term will focus on the challenges faced by the emerging adolescent.  I am sure you agree that it is important to be informed about life.  Puberty, friendships, stress, peer pressure, body image and navigating social media are just a few of the challenges your child will face on their journey. Being able to talk about these issues will help them overcome these challenges.

Each class member will then publish a page for a class magazine. They will be able to refer to it whenever they feel the need for a refresher. The class magazine will also be shared with families and friends.

One of your child’s tasks has been to interview a family member about the challenges they faced as a 12-13 year old.  The 2 questions they will ask are…

  • What challenges did you face as a Year 8 student?

  • What strategies did you have to deal with these challenges?

Hopefully this activity will provide an opportunity for you to have rich conversations with your child.
