Room 7 were the first Year 8 class to head out to Berwick camp this year. They have contributed some great pieces of writing to share their camp experiences...

Room 7 Camp Overview

We went to camp on Tuesday 9 March. After getting settled and orientated we started the activities. The first activities we did were the initiative course, the flying fox and stretcher rescue. On the first night we played a game where we had 2 lives and we had to run away from the parents as they tried to take them away.

On day 2 we started with raft building, kayaking and go karting in the pond. After that we did tree climbing, abseiling and the crazy swing which is a game where you run and then swing and collect ribbons that are clipped onto a rope. At night we went on a small walk in a forest around the camp.

On the third day we travelled to a farm on the Maungatuas and walked up a creek arriving at the top 1.5 hours later. After lunch we did a high ropes course which is a series of ropes tied around trees that you travel across and then we finished on the farm with ziplining which was awesome! Back at camp we did the mud run which lived up to its name and reputation! A quick shower and then a sit in the sauna was our reward! That night we played more night games. On the last day at camp we did archery and air rifles and also had to do a big clean up. It was a fun camp which really challenged us in lots of ways. We were all tired on the bus ride home.

Moment in time writing...

MUD RUN

I heard cries of disgust as we walked through the slimy, smelly Mud.

I saw my classmates rubbing mud onto their skins with a terrified but delighted look on their faces.

I felt excited, disgusted and determined all at the same time.

I wondered when we could wash the stink off of us.

Night games

I hear all the kids screaming saying please please give me my tag back please

I saw the flash lights going crazy and all the BIG scary shadows

I felt the wet grass on my shoes and my friends grabbing my back and saying please help me

I wondered if my hiding technique is good enough.

Kayaking

I heard people plunge themselves into the arctic water and then I heard the squeals of shock.

I saw the bright blue sky and the shimmery sun hitting the surface of the shiny water and lots of excitement on my classmates' faces.

I felt the kayak suddenly tip me off and the freezing cold shock of water reminded me I'm alive.

I wonder what the water feels like in the winter.

Creek Scramble

I heard children laughing and splashing in the water as they climbed up the rocks.
I saw people slipping off rocks and squealing as they tumbled into the water.
I felt energetic, delighted, but anxious about falling in.
I wondered how much longer I had to climb the slippery moss rocks

Tree climbing

I heard the wind whisper in my ear while I was climbing higher and higher.

I saw sap glued on the pine- branches, like sticky golden syrup.

I felt my heart beating faster and faster as I climbed up the enormous branches.

I wonder what it would feel like if a branch snapped while I climbed on it.

Crazy Swing

I heard… the clunk of the swing as I went whooshing back and forth.

I saw… my hand fully stretched reaching as far as I could for the ribbon.

I felt… like I was soaring through the sky, above treetops and rivers on mountains.

I wondered… if I would be able to get a finger on the ribbon, all I needed was just one finger, and I would be able to grab the 10,000 point ribbon.

CREEK SCRAMBLE

I heard the rushing water of the streams

I saw giant rocks and trees

I felt my shoes getting wetter with every step

I wondered how this awesome trip could turn so badly so quickly

Zipline

I heard... shrieks of delight as people zoomed across the valley many meters below.

I saw... others cowering with terror as I jumped and suddenly I was part of the sky.

I felt... sudden excitement as the harness took my weight racing me across the rolling green hills leaving me breathless.

I wondered... If I would ever come back and do it again. My brain yearns for more.
