Golf
During term 1 we have had Melanie Harper from Kiwi golf come into school to run golf lessons for each class. It was great to see our students try out a new activity and for some of our students an opportunity to discuss and extend their golf skill and knowledge with Mel.
Early Term 2, there is a new golf initiative happening for our golfing students to get involved in . More information to follow.
Tennis
Every Monday a group of 40 tennis players have been attending Otago Tennis at the Stevenson Centre down at Logan Park. These tennis sessions have been all about developing skill and tennis game awareness with coaches from Tennis Otago. Well done to those involved and for giving tennis ago.
Rippa Rugby
Monday evenings Rippa Rugby has been taking place at the Edgar Centre. We have 12 teams competing which is a great number of students participating. The special aspect of Rippa Rugby at Balmacewen, is the teams are created within the classroom. Therefore, teams are created and made by all students in their own individual classrooms. Some classes have joined to make numbers. The concept creates great classroom friendships and strong classroom morale.
Waterpolo
Water Polo is having another strong term. Our Water Polo participation numbers are very healthy, as we currently have 4 large numbered teams. Water Polo has been taking place every Friday night at Moana pool. Our students train Friday mornings before school at Moana Pool. A big thank you to our TIC - Lisa Dixon who runs a smooth programme for our waterpolo students. A big thank you also to our parents, teachers, coaches and managers who have given their time each Friday to make sure our teams are catered for, much appreciated.
Touch
Touch has managed to strike a few rainy Thursdays so far, which is just unlucky. Touch is again strong this term at school. We have 8 teams playing each Thursday evening down at Kensington Oval, 5 boys and 3 girls teams. Thank you to all those teachers, and volunteer parent helpers who are helping with our touch programme. Your support is always appreciated.
A special mention to one of our very own colleagues, Mrs Alex Buttery. Over the last couple of weeks, Alex received a Touch NZ Service Award. Alex was recognised for her 20 years plus of service to the game.
Alex also received her upgrade for refereeing. She was awarded her black badge alongside her son who received his referee's black badge at the same time - What an achievement. Congratulations.
Cricket
Yeah! Girls Smash Cricket.
Our Yeah! Girls Smash team head down on a Monday evening to Logan Park, to participate in a fun 8-aside modified game festival run by Dunedin Cricket. Our girls have been enjoying their experience and learning plenty of new cricketing skills through a fun and relaxed environment.
Weekly Cricket:
We have two very strong mix-grade hard ball teams. Balmacewen Blue and Red. These two teams compete in the Wednesday night Intermediate grade and have been doing very well regarding individual performances as well as team results. A big thank you to our parents who have taken their time in helping out with either, umpiring, scoring, managing and coaching, your efforts are much appreciated.
Futsal
Futsal is a very popular summer sport again for us at Balmacewen. This term we have 12 teams competing on a Wednesday evening at the Edgar Centre. Both boys and girls are involved which has been fantastic to see. A big thank you to our large number of parent helpers who coach and manage our teams, thank you. We have 2 more weeks of futsal to go, good luck to all our teams for the remainder of their games.
