A harsh voice barked out a command, ‘Tie him up!’. Tom had no idea why these people were here, but he did know that they were in his cave where he stored some of his valuables. Before he could run to the his little shoebox of personal things, an open hand smacked him on his back, sending him to the hard, cold and wet floor of the cave.
He trusted his instincts and rolled to soften the impact. Without noticing, he grab a large, heavy rock and aimed at the man who pushed him. He threw the heavy rock and to his luck, he hit the man square on the stomach. The man groaned in his deep voice and fell to the ground, writhing in pain, almost unconscious.
Tom quickly ran to him and grabbed the knife he was holding. As he picked the glinting knife, he saw a sight that made his blood run cold; the man with the harsh voice was bigger than Tom had thought, and he had a gun, ready to fire. Tom had to react quickly. He zigzagged towards the man in a desperate attempt to evade the speeding bullets. Shot after shot, the huge, strong man missed Tom.
When he was 2 feet away from the man, Tom dove forward and tackled the man to the ground. Hitting the ground, he was about to take the man’s gun, but all the commotion made Tom forget that another man was there, watching him attack his comrades. The other man quickly grabbed Tom around his torso and threw him away from his boss. Tom was lucky he got the gun, but he forgot to roll as he fell. He crashed onto the ground, knocking the breath out of him. He let go of the gun, groaning in pain. Tom had a good look at the men who attacked him. The one that looked like the boss had a mustache and a stern face. He was struggling to get up. The man from whom he got the gun from looked the youngest, unconscious on the cold floor. The man who pushed him just then had a beard and a scowl on his face.
He was walking towards Tom, holding a bat in his hand. As Tom tried to get up, the man swung the weapon at him.The boy’s vision greyed out, but he managed to stay conscious. The man swung his weapon again and again, and Tom was on the verge of unconsciousness. Pain coursed throughout his head. He couldn’t fight it any longer.
Just as the man was about to swing the weapon for a finishing hit, Tom heard a huge bang that made his ears ring. He could barely see through his eyes as the man yelled out in agony and collapsed to the ground. Tom was confused as he was hurt. It looked as if he was shot. As soon as the man hit the ground, he saw what had happened to him.
5 men in blue uniform were there, and Tom’s theory had been right. The man HAD been shot. He looked at the one who held the gun, and it was the police. “Just what do you think you’re doing here, young man?” Tom was lost for words as the policemen helped him up and walked him out of the freezing, dimly lit cave.
Tom sat on a rock and was questioned by the Officer, and he told them everything. The cave, his valuables, the bad men. The Officer stared at the ground, as if he was piecing together the clues.
The Officer finally told him that these men were going everywhere, trying to find some kind of treasure, causing trouble for months. Tom was confused, so it took a while for him to speak. “So... I.. I stopped them..?” He asked.
“That's right, kid.” The man replied. “You’re gonna be the talk of the town.”
