Year 8 News

High school visits, Eco sanctuary visits, future in tech speakers and the last of our Berwick Camps - it has been such a busy start to Term Three!

Our Year 8 classes are currently working on our Term Three Impact topic which is looking at the two big questions - What Impact do we have on our Environment? and How can we make a difference?

All classes have been engaged in a range of activities to ignite interest and engage in this topic including video images, class discussions and readings , expert guest speakers and working with the educators from the Orokonui Eco-Sanctuary looking at the Impact of introduced pests on Native New Zealand flora and fauna. This included a day trip out to visit the Eco Sanctuary and how this special part of our local heritage has been preserved for future generations.

Today we had the Keep Dunedin Beautiful theatre group in to perform and some classes are planning to do a walking tour of the Dunedin Street Art looking at the positive impact it has had on our inner city. Students will look at many different aspects of Impact and parents will be invited in during Week ten where students will share their learning.

All of our Year 8 classes have now completed their Year 8 camps at Berwick. Highlights again included biking, abseiling, kayaking, confidence course and the much anticipated assault course mud run!

It has also  been a very busy start to Term  three for our Year 8 students who are currently making choices and decisions for next year. We have had visits to our local High Schools and many open nights to visit for our students to have a look at what our High Schools have to offer. We thank our Year 8 students for their help at our Open Night also - they were great ambassadors for our school.

Well done to all students who have been involved in winter sports team finals, mathematicians  who were successful at the O'Mathalon and  to those who competed in the recent sports exchange.  Check out the Year 8 Hall of Fame for those who have achieved out of school success in a range of areas. Please let us know if your child achieves success out of school so that we can congratulate them.

Over the next few weeks classes will move into the Inquiry phase of our theme exploring ideas further, speeches will be prepared and presented in each class and we hope to have our Year 8 Activate challenge that had to be postponed from Term One.

We would like to once again thank our parents and caregivers for all of their support particularly with our school camps, trips and school activities.
