Winter Warmers

Our Year 8 classes have all made a functional heat bag filled with rice or wheat. They have also designed and created a cover to add personality and showcase their sewing skills. They designed the cover to suit their stakeholder's likes.

Students had to consider their fabric choices carefully. Natural fabrics such as cottons and linens were used for the heat bags so they can safely be heated in a microwave with a cup of water.

Polar fleece, wool, denim and cottons were options for the cover. These are for decoration only and should not go in a microwave. Checkout some of the cool designs in the photo gallery.

We are about to begin our screen printing unit. Students will decide what they would like to print on. They can sew an outcome, such as a cushion cover, pillowslip, tote bag pencil case etc or they could provide a cotton t-shirt. I am encouraging our Year 8's to think carefully about their design decisions. We do not want to create textile waste so they need to design for a primary stakeholder and meet one of their needs. If they are not going to wear a t-shirt with their hand cut stencil printed on it then I would prefer they chose a different outcome. For example - a tote bag used to carry their gym gear so their screen print their favourite gym apparatus with gymnast on it. As this is a learning unit, we cannpt expect perfect prints.
