Albatross Colony - Education Officers visit.

As part of our unit we have been looking at the IMPACT we have on our planet. One of our current discussions is around rubbish and plastics in our oceans. In class we have watched a very disturbing video on the Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. The video was looking at the amount of plastic and other rubbish that we as humans discard every day that ends up in our oceans. The video focused on Midway Ocean- in the middle of the Pacific Ocean - that has become a rubbish dump where currents drag our rubbish thousands of kilometres. The Impact this has on wildlife such as albatross, seals, penguins, fish, turtles and other wildlife who mistake this rubbish as food, fed to their young, and causing at the extreme death. We discussed this further with the educators who looked at different products and how long they take to decompose in the water. They role played an albatross bird who mistakes plastic floating in the ocean as it's usually dinner of squid.
Our syndicate will be following up on this topic in class over the next couple of weeks.
