The Koru Games has been running for 3 years and seems to be growing each year. This year there were over 2,000 participants in ten sports. Sports included Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Rugby Sevens, Football, Lawn Bowls, Table Tennis, Touch, Tennis and Netball.
Monday morning we traveled up to Christchurch and got settled into our accommodation and had a good look around the venue (Lincoln)
Tuesday morning began with the Opening Ceremony where all participants met for a welcome ceremony, then straight into the competition. In the netball competition there were 32 teams from throughout the South Island. Balmacewen did extremely well on day one and two - winning 6 out of their 7 games. This meant they qualified for the quarter finals on Thursday morning and ensured them a place in the top 8.
Balmacewen were faced with a tough challenge on Thursday in the quarterfinal playing a well drilled Hillview team, who beat us 15 - 7 to advance to the semi-final, Hillview ended up being the eventual winners of the tournament.
Balmacewen learnt a lot from this loss and turned things around to win their last two games and to end the tournament in a very credible fifth place.
All girls performed extremely well and represented Balmacewen to the best of their abilities. It was an enjoyable week and one I am sure they will never forget.
