Year 8 Triathlon

Our Year 8 Triathlon took place at Otago Boys High School on Friday the 10th November. There were three legs to the day; biking, running and swimming. Students could either choose to take part in the competitive or non-competitive section. This day proved to be a challenge, where students displayed signs of determination, grit and a growth mindset.
The crowd was buzzing. Nerves snapped and sizzled above our heads. Whispers floated through the air. It was the school triathlon. Goggles were slapped on, and the bikes lay gleaming in the sun. We were ready. Non Competitive girls filled the start line, and soon they were off. The bikes sped round the course, and the girls disappeared behind the nets to start their run. Before long, the boys were beginning. Once again, the sound of whirring pedals reached the crowd. Bikes sweeped the track, and shortly the leaders had moved on. In the pool, girls were starting their swim. Shoes were stripped and competitors were in the water. Spinning arms, sent mirrored ripples across the pool, and toes frothed the surface. Clambered out, and began the final sprint, the green flags of the finishing chute were flickering invitingly, and they forced each and every runner to add that extra fizz of strength. One after another, Balmacewen students, pounded down the final leg, determination etched on their faces, right until the very end. The pride ballooned as roars of encouragement filled their ears.
