Syrian Afternoon Tea!

Jack, Bronwyn and I attended a celebration of our new Syrian student community last Wednesday. The students presented slideshows about where they have come from, information about their culture and food and shared with us information about themselves in English. They also had a skit and singing about their experiences in leaving their homeland and their journey to New Zealand. Friends and families gathered for an afternoon tea and an opportunity to recognise their learning and achievements since arriving at Balmacewen. It was an emotional and humbling afternoon to see how well our Syrian students have adapted to the change and upheaval in their lives. We are lucky to have Maher and Aya in our class and I have been impressed with the way our students have welcomed and included them in our class and around our school.
