Year 7 News

Our classrooms are buzzing again as students and teachers alike are pleased to have some sense of routine and normality return. We have reflected on our time with online learning and sharing of work and activities that students have completed at home. We have been so impressed with their resilience, the way they quickly adapted to the new online platforms and learnt some new skills including time management and more self directed learning. We look to take the positives from this experience moving forward into our programmes at school.
We began our Hooked on Science unit during this time with lots of fun experiments that students could do at home as ignitors for this unit. This term began with a bang with our guest presenter Amadeo who presented an engaging and informative science show for our students. His focus was on asking questions, wondering about the world around us and thinking like scientists. This will lead on to our classroom Project Based Learning ASPIRE unit for the term - Hooked on Science.
Scribble bots, Hokey Pokey, Marble Runs, Exploding Canisters! Our classrooms have been a hive of activity as we explore and discuss different areas of science and the science behind these ignitor activities.
Over the next few weeks students will begin the process of learning about how to design and plan their own science shows. Our project is to create engaging science shows targeting younger students to video and publish to their own Youtube science channel. Amedeo will also select some videos to publish on his Fun Science at home Youtube channel. Students will be planning, critiquing and practicing their science shows over the next few weeks to then video. To help develop their skills Miss Dick is working with each class on their video making techniques.
As we return to school we will also reflect and reset our Balmac way and school values. There is an emphasis in all classes on our Super Skills - on being organised and ready to learn and working collaboratively. It has been fantastic to see how our Year 7 students continue to grow and develop in these areas and this has been reflected in our classrooms and playgrounds.
