Tournament of Minds team success.

Our Tournament of Minds team recently competed at the regional tournament in Christchurch. Read on to find out more about Tournament of Minds and to find out how they went at regionals.

Tournament of Minds is a problem solving programme for teams of students from both primary and secondary schools.

They are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges from one of the following disciplines:

  • The Arts
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
  • Language Literature
  • Social Sciences

Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.

Teams are required to work together on a Long Term Challenge for six weeks without assistance from teachers, parents or peers. They are encouraged to explore possibilities and experiment with ideas as they endeavour to produce their best possible solution. They develop a creative and original way to communicate this solution to others, working within predefined parameters such as limited materials, complex challenge criteria and the deadline of Tournament Day.

Our team of students (4 year 8's and 3 year 7's) chose an Arts challenge and after 6 weeks of hard work they presented their challenge solution to a panel of judges and an audience on Tournament Day (Saturday 1st September) in Christchurch. They had ten minutes in which to present and had to do so within a 3 metre by 3 metre performance area.

The team then had to complete a spontaneous challenge, a new challenge which has to be solved by the team on the spot and presented creatively.

The team worked so well together and had fun completing their challenges. They won their section and qualified for the national tournament!

Thank you to all of the parents for their support and for getting our students to Christchurch.  A special well done to our team members: Holly, Maia, Emma, Tessa, Harry, Simon and Max
