Winter Sport is now well under way.

It has been awesome to see so many students getting involved in sport. A massive thank you to all our volunteer coaches who have given up their time to help our teams. The students are improving every week. Term 3 is shaping up to be a busy term for Balmacewen Sport. Please keep an eye out for updates and notices. At the bottom you will see some events coming up early in the term. Thank you again for your support this term, I am looking forward to a busy term 3.

Highlights from some of our sports:

Basketball

It's been an awesome basketball season so far, a warm welcome to all the students who are trying basketball for the first time this term. A special thanks to all of our volunteer coaches. We have 8 Otago Boys students that have offered their time to help our skill development. We also have a number of parents who have stepped up to the challenge as well. Look forward to the ongoing success of our teams. If any students want to support with their game encourage them to come have a korero with our teacher in charge of basketball, Jane Hendry.

Netball

The netball comp at The Edgar Centre is well underway. There has been some awesome games so far, with some close results. Great to see a good number of students involved this year, with some being their first time. We are really looking forward to the Southland exchange in term 3, we will also have an all boys team for the first time playing Southland Boys. Thank you again to our parents who have given up their time to support our teams.

Badminton

The Balmacewen Badminton programme is well underway and gearing up for a busy term 3. There will be a badminton team competing at the Southland Sports Exchange in the first week followed by the official start of the Intermediate schools competition in week 2. Badminton is a fast growing sport at Balmac with encouraging numbers in both social and competitive grades.

Hockey

Our Hockey teams are off to a great start this season. They have had some very cold nights down at the turf. A massive thank you to our parents who are down there in the cold each week coaching the teams, our students are going from strength to strength.

Kane Russell

We were lucky enough to have ex Balmacewen student and Black stick Hockey player Kane Russell visit school. He ran a session for our boys team and spoke about a few of his highlights throughout his career. He kindly donated his 2022 Commonwealth games top to the school. All the best at the Paris Olympics Kane.
