Year 7 News

As the end of the first term approaches we reflect on how far our Year 7 students have come over their first nine weeks at Balmacewen and how busy we have been! From getting to know their new classes, starting sport and cultural activities, school swimming and sports it has been a packed term.

All eight classes had really successful camps at Waihola CYC. The weather was fantastic most of the time and  all  students have had the experience of sleeping in tents, plenty of outdoor challenge opportunities, team building and making new friends.

All classes had exceptional parent/whanau help and we cannot thank you enough for giving up your time to help out at these camps. Check out some of our camp writing in this newsletter also. We would like to thank and acknowledge Tom from Bakery on Bond who supported our camps with our bread and buns! Thank you so much.

Our Year 7  classes have turned their focus into our term one integrated theme which includes our literacy focus of moment in time writing and readings to tie in with our New Zealand Histories focus through articles, journals and podcasts. Alongside this we have been planning and working on their projects  for our Ūkaipō PBL presentations. Check out this link on Captain Cook.

As part of this, the Year 7 team is looking at having a celebration of all our cultures and unique heritage by having a shared lunch and dress up day on Wednesday 9th April. On this day we encourage students who wish to dress in their appropriate cultural attire to do so and to bring along a special dish from their culture or special family dish to share. Over the last week of term students will also be sharing their presentations to their class and then with their community.

We continue our work on the Balmac way with a focus on our school core concepts and values. In class, students have completed a number of activities to reinforce these ideas with a focus on "this is how we do it here".

School swimming started for the Year 7 students this week and they are working through rotations in swimming lessons and water skills during their sessions as a lead up to the school swimming sports next week.

Thank you again to all of our parents and caregivers who continue to support our class programmes and activities. Next term our focus shift to Health and Wellbeing starting the term with our Puberty unit.
