South island Waterpolo

During the weekend of November 10-12th we entered a team in the South island water polo tournament here in Dunedin.

Over the weekend there were 16 teams from all over the South Island completing. Our Balmac Gold team was playing well against some very strong opposition and managed to win our pool play with games against Southland Boys, Breens Intermediate and St Hildas.

Unfortunately for us in the cross over we came up against the current champions who have won over the last five years - Cobham A from Christchurch. It was a very tense game and a lot closer than the final score indicates - holding them goalless in two of the four quarters and being the closest team to them over the tournament. After a very intense battle in the water we went down 7-1. They went on to win the tournament.

We then played against Cobham B in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. The team came out strong once again and ended up with an easy win 10-3 taking home a well earned bronze medal - third in the South Island. The team was a pleasure to look after over the weekend, they grew in confidence and ability, especially our development players, and we displayed the Balmac values the whole weekend - especially perseverance. I would also like to acknowledge Ruby who was also selected for the Tournament team!

We would like to thank Tim Orchiston our coach for the team and the staff who managed the team over the weekend as well as our parent support crew!
