Room 14 Camp Moment in Time Writing

As a follow up to our Berwick Camp Room 14 have been working on a Moment in Time piece of writing. Here are a few of our samples....

  • The Night Run

I'm slowly army crawling across the cold wet ground. The wet grass feeling like ice burning through my skin. I can only just make out the outline of my classmates slowly creeping across the paddock filled with children. My sweaty palms clenching the torch.I slowly move my thumb over the buttons easy to use as if it was a bomb.

I can't tell the difference between the rustling of the trees and the whispering of my friends.A smell, the mixture of mud, wet grass and Megan's nervous farts fill my nostrils, not the nicest of smells. I'm tasting the victory of getting to the pole and winning operation overland!

Suddenly a bright light shone in my eyes, I was blinded for a second.

Damn it, WE LOST OUR VICTORY!

We’re slowly walking towards the road, our heads hanging low.

  •     Splash

“Get down” I hissed at Hannah. “No, I don't want to”. “Just lie down”. Grudgingly Hannah pressed her back into the thick mud. “Why did you…” Hannah's voice trailed off as the flash of a torch skimmed the surface of the bush we were hiding in. The familiar echo of screams rang across the field.”That's why I told you to get down!” I whispered muffling my giggle. “Shh” breathed Hannah staring into the distance “it's just the trees” I replied as Hannah relaxed.

Throughout the dense bushes small flashes of light could be seen every now and then, and each time we would press ourselves against the ground or sit deeper in the bush. The rustle of my musty old raincoat scraping against the bushes was enough to drive anyone crazy. The crisp night air lightly frosting our cheeks convinced us we might have to move. In the distance a small trickle of water could be heard. “ I say we should follow the river” Hannah whispered from the other side of a flax bush. “ Let's go then” I reapplied, the shadows of the trees looked more like humans now and they seemed to be drawing closer.

After fighting through the cold mud we proceed to a large bush. The what was once a trickle of water had turned into a small river. “We need to cross, we're too close to the fence line!” “The hunters are there.”. Hannah stayed lookout while I looked for a crossing point. At the end of the river a small dip of mud and grass could be seen. It was out of view from the hunters and would be a good place to stop and plan the rest of our mission. Hannah and I made eye contact, I pointed to the dip.’Down there’ I mouthed slowly. After a verifying nod I started to crawl down the mound.

“SPLASH” the ice cold water rushed up my nose. All mussels in my body tensed until I was gasping for air. Gripping onto the grass on the river bank, I pulled myself onto the bank. Hannah only just noticing that I was climbing back up looked puzzled. “Just get down and abandon mission”.

  •  In the Darkness

Darkness stormed my surroundings, devouring all of the few sources of light.

I was crouched down onto the damp, course grass like a lion stalking it’s prey, the dew a small spider creeping into my shoes. Camp stood isolated, it’s many eyes glowing in the distance. Heavy dragon breathing escaped my lungs and blew steam into the icy air. It was one of the few sounds that escaped and filled the paddock, mingling with the crunch of footsteps plowing across the ground, and bunches of whispering voices. A frozen, weightless hand slapped my face as my head lifted from the ground, and the hand’s owner blew across the grass, making it dance vigorously. Shadows stood motionless against the earth that was fading into the night, the shivering wire fence the only indication I was trapped. Bright rays of light -the enemy- sliced through the bushes and pooled onto innocent faces. But it hadn’t started yet. The high pitched scream of the whistle pounded through the army’s ears, carrying a deadly silence. It was the signal the my dangerous mission had began, and I would complete it or die trying.

  • Nerves at the Ball

I can feel the rush of cold air as I step out the door. Adrenaline pumps through me, I walk down the corridor my heavy steps pounding on the wooden floorboards, my heart races. A sick feeling in my stomach occurs, suddenly I’m standing right behind the door, my shaky hand reaches out for the doorknob. I hesitate, my heart is pounding so hard I feel like my chest is going to burst. The door creaks open, most of the girls are huddled together, others are just sitting in silence. I finally muster the nerve to ask my lady to the ball.

I propelled my legs forward, feeling the wind through my saturated hair. It was as if I was running in slow motion. I slipped through the mud, glaring at the upcoming puddle. I dived high in the air and glided down into the puddle. I slid through the puddle and over the slippery grass. I slid several metres before I heard Ms Dixon blurting out “Touch the table Mac!!” I leaned forward and touched the table, then I felt the relief of knowing I had finish the gutbuster.
