Year 8 Forensics and Genetics Workshop

Read below to check out what 32 of our year 8 students have been up to at the University of Otago Genetics Department.
On Monday 21st November 4 students from each year 8 class were lucky enough to venture to the Biochemistry Lab at the Otago University to undertake a genetics and forensics workshop called DIY DNA.
They were welcomed by a murder scene that they were to solve using a range of scientific techniques.
First they learnt how to use a pipette and then they looked at the “DNA Fingerprint” using a technique called gel electrophoresis. They then separated the DNA which helped them to solve the murder.
Next they moved onto looking at DNA of fruit flies under a microscope and identifying mutations.
A big thank you to the Genetics at Otago team that led this amazing experience for 32 of our year 8 students.
