I inhaled short sharp breaths, clenching my fists. It was too late to turn back. Even the bravest people had a certain glint in their eyes, that told me that deep inside, they were concerned and worried too. Would it matter if I backed down now?
Even if I had been assured a thousand times, that It would be “fun”... it couldn’t cease my raging anxiety, whirring around my gut. My stomach churned, as another person clipped onto the line and zipped off into the thin, cold mist. I gulped. I took another shallow breath, and ruffled the harness into place. It was time. If they could do it, I could. They had all assured me that I could make it over to the tyres, at the end.
I hopped up to the gate, My hands shaking as I clipped in my harness. I couldn’t believe it, I was trusting a rope with my life. Had I gone mad? Was I really doing this? What was I thinking? These thoughts spun around in my head, like a broken carousel ride. My brain was ready to back down, but my body was already committed. They expected me to do this. I couldn’t just say no. Especially not now.
Time seemed to slow down. My heartbeat was pounding in my ears. My palms were sweating, my legs shaking as I took a step forward. The small, creaky gate swung open, and I looked down at the long dips below. I gulped and looked over to the others. They all had reassuring smiles on their faces, waiting patiently. My eyes flicked around, unsure of what to do.
I exhaled slowly. It was now or never. I stepped down, and let the harness and line take my weight. Those few seconds seemed to last forever, gliding across the land. I zoomed across the trees. I felt like I was flying. I could hear my friends cheering for me. I spun around, gazing at the wildlife in awe. My anxiety dropped as I hit the tyres, at the end of the line.
I huffed, relieved, as my harness was unclipped. I chucked the clips over my shoulder, so they wouldn’t drag across the sandy track, and began trudging back up the hill. I smiled and waved at others, as they zipped down behind me. Now, there was only one thing circling my mind. The words: “I want to do that again!”
Bells -Room 1
Have you ever smelled summer?
Sure you have
Remember that time when you went to the beach?
Waves were crashing,
Your towel, legs and hair were all sandy
And you flopped right down on the soft, silky sand
Remember how the smell of the seaweed was suffocating your nostrils?
That was summer.
Remember that time when you were swimming in the pool?
You dived under the water
And got bashed on the head by someone's foot
Your eyes were stinging
You were short on breath
Remember how all the kids screaming was making your headache worse?
That was summer.
Remember that time when you were walking in the bush?
And a wild pig came up to you and you were freaking out
Your heart was racing, your legs began to tremble in fear
Remember how the pigs stench was making you gag?
That was summer.
Remember that time when you were hanging out with your friends at the swings?
And one of them fell off the swing
Friends racing, panicking, knees scraped
Remember how it all went quiet?
That was summer.
Meg
Remember that time
When you were jumping
off the boat at the lake
And you were happy and hot
You belly flopped on the lake
Remember how the freshwater smelt?
That was summer.Have you smelled summer?
Sure you have
That was summer
Remember that time
When you were going down the hydro slide at the pool
And your head kept hitting the top of the slide.
Then you landed on someone going out of the slide?
Remember how the water smelt like chemicals
That was summer By Nieko
Parent V/S Kids
Everyone scattered like pigeons. I sprinted as fast as I could straight towards a tree in the distance. After a little while, Otto came over and hid there behind me.
Then the whistle blew. That's when we all got anxious because we knew the parents had been released.
I saw two parents from the corner of my eye so I made a run for the house on the hill. Luckily they didn’t spot me, but I think they spotted Otto. A minute later I was going to make a run for it but I spotted someone around the corner of the house. It was my Dad. I didn’t say anything because I knew he would want to get me, so I went back the way I came and ran so fast down the hill my legs couldn’t keep up with me. That’s when I fell head over heals and missed home base by a couple of meters.
“Sophie you really committed to that” I heard behind me as Mrs Cooper's hand landed on my shoulder. My heart sank as I had been defeated.
As I walked to stand with my other defeated classmates I saw Bella making a huge run down the hill. Mrs Cooper and another parent chasing her and she did the exact same thing as me, she went head over heels down the hill. At least I wasn’t the only soldier to fall.

Summer days
Remember when you were trying to hold your breath the longest and you feel like you were getting dragged deeper and deeper into the pool depths? Remember how you felt cold, nervous and tired?
That was summer
Remember when you paddled into that perfect wave and you stood up on that surfboard remember how you felt nervous, excited and focused. That was summer
